UGI Teacher
UGI Teacher
is a product currently in development at the Centre for Health Evidence in
conjunction with JAMA, members of the Evidence-Based
Medicine Working Group and other EBM interest groups to address the
needs of teachers of EBM. UGI Teacher combines all the
interactivity and resources of the UGI Learner
edition with new ways for integrating and packaging electronic
information. It goes beyond current tools available on the Internet by
combining high quality knowledge resources with a comprehensive and evolving
set of EBM curricular materials. The intent is to provide the teacher of EBM
with a complete package of resources and tools for developing workshops and
courses.
The following list highlights materials already being developed at CHE that we
intend to use in a UGI Teacher package. This list may change over time as new
technologies are employed, new tools are developed, and user feedback is collected.
In addition to the UGI Learner
Web site, UGI Teacher
includes:
- Integration:
UGI Teacher
is delivered through a secure Web site and
integrated Internet desktop technology called VIVIDESK™. This is a "Distributed
Desktop Portal" that allows multiple subscriptions to be accessed
simultaneously. Information in one resource (e.g. Users' Guides) can be
linked to information in other resources (e.g. databases, electronic
textbooks and journals, Web sites, etc.). This same technology supports
messaging, alerts, communications and simultaneous access to multiple
resources under a single Internet interface. For more information,
please go to UGI Desktop.
- Slide Packages: Series of slide sets that can be used in workshops,
seminars, and online instruction about EBM.
- Case Packages:
Building upon the case-based modules included in UGI
Learner, the UGI Teacher
package includes a selection of fully
interactive online cases, and instructors' notes about how to
maximize the impact and teaching value of case-based packages. The
instructors' guide includes detailed suggestions about how and
when to bring out specific teaching points. Instructors also have
access to tools that instantly display individual or aggregate
learner responses to cases.
- Workshop/Course Packages: Packages for organizers, facilitators and
participants are being developed by CHE for other projects. These
packages provide all the materials needed to run rounds, hands-on
workshops through to multiple day courses. These could also be
re-designed and deployed within UGI Teacher
.
- Multiple Choice Questions Database:
An electronic multiple choice questions (MCQ) database linked in to
the Users' Guides is currently in development. This resource will become
part of UGI Teacher
, with clients able to use this Internet-based
system to enhance their own teaching programs.
- EBM Teaching Tips Database: A number of EBMWG members presently are publishing a
series of teaching scripts about how to address difficult concepts
in EBM instruction. The CHE is currently contracted to produce the
online version of these scripts, therefore, given an appropriate
agreement, this database could be incorporated with a UGI
Teacher
offering.
- EBM Diary: The
VIVIDESK™ system includes a personal diary that can be used to
track questions, take notes, record literature searches, build
lists of favorite internet resources and save worksheets for
future reference. The Diary also allows users to share ideas and
resources with other subscribers through the VIVIDESK™ system.
This could be used as a tool for instructors to build up their own
database of resources in addition to those provided through
UGI Teacher
.
